If your skin is anything like mine then it can become really dry
during the cool/colder months. So I compiled a short list of my favorite
moisturizers that will keep you hydrated for when Old Man Winter comes.

1. Aveda Tourmaline Charged Hydrating Creme $40.00
This
is one of my favorites. It has Tourmaline- a naturally energizing
mineral—mixed with marine and plant extracts and 11 powerful
anti-oxidants. It's pricey (for some) but I only use it in the winter.
You don't need much of it to get the job done.

2. Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream $10.99
Not
only can you use this on you face, but you can moisturize your whole
body with it as we. A little goes a long way. Great for eczema and
psoriasis too.

3. Boots Expert Sensitive Hydrating Moisturizer $4.99
This
moisturizer is not only good for dry skin, but sensitive skin as well.
It contains aloe vera and mineral water which is specially formulated to
soothe as it hydrates. Fragrance-free.

4. Hope In A Jar SPF 25 $15.00 (travel size)
This
moisturizer is made by Philosophy. Not only does it moisturize it
protects you from UVA and UVB sun rays. Remember we must protect our
skin from the sun during the winter months as well!Beautyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10840900350257087393noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031945755618122790.post-82419376662183011232012-10-19T12:10:00.000-05:002012-10-19T12:10:00.660-05:00Moisturizing Pumpkin Facial Mask

As an Black woman hyperpigmentation can very hard to get rid of. The summer can make it worse especially if you're not wearing SPF everyday like you should (shame on me). I had been looking to get an actual chemical peel but decided against it since I have an actual job and couldn't go out in public if my skin was peeling. So I search online for a mild peel and narrowed it down to two choices: REN Resurfacing AHA Concentrate and Philosophy The Microdelivery Peel.

It's no big deal!" After all celebrities are human just like the rest of us. Sometimes seeing certain people without makeup is shocking because with it on their skin looks so flawless, but underneath not so much. These ladies posted below still look great (in my opinion), and may actually look better.

I was inspired to post this because I find a lot of people that are always trying to find something to cover up their blemishes. Why not try solving the problem if it's possible instead of always concealing them?

Hello beautiful readers. I'm back with yet another review.

I was contacted by a customer service rep about trying a Reviva Labs product. After researching the company and visiting their website, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to try their non-chemical light skin peel. I love exfoliation and I'm always looking to try something new. However, there is a such thing as too much exfoliating, so don't over do it!

Anyway, upon opening the product I realized the look of it isn't the most attractive. It's thick like a paste with a grittiness to it. The smell isn't the most pleasant because the thyme oil is really strong.

Here's a description of the peel from Reviva Labs:

"Peeling" is a European term for one of the most unique European items in the entire cosmetic field. THIS IS NOT A HARSH CHEMICAL PEEL. It doesn't "peel skin" as we know it, but gently lifts off more hardened, dried skin cells than can be achieved by scrubs or any other "exfoliating" product. Dead-cell accumulation prevents treatment products from penetrating and keeps skin tone from looking fresh and vibrant. For aging and problem skin, PEEL is absolutely vital; it offers multiple benefits, which one can see and feel with just one application. Used by Europe's top Skin Treatment Specialists as a supplementary cleansing step in any skin care program. Any skin type, any age, can benefit from a once-a-week "Peel". Our Peel ingredients also stimulate the deeper new cells to move upward at a faster rate - causing the skin surface to look tighter, clearer and healthier.

PROS
+ Tone of my skin appeared brighter.
+ Softened my skin.
CONS
- The smell. This product would really be a winner if the smell was more pleasant.
- Removing the product with your fingers can be really messy.

All in all, I'd say is it is a good exfoliation. It's great for those who like to feel like their product is doing something. However the smell is not my cup of tea.
Since my trusty finishing kabuki brush by Eco Tools got destroyed I needed a similar brush to give me a great foundation application.

I applied a liquid foundation and it gave me a good finishing look, but not the airbrushed look I wanted.

You can find this brush at your local Macy's, Bloomingdales, or Neiman Marcus department stores. It retails at $54 USD, but I was able to receive discounts so I paid less than that.

Is it worth the price? I'd say no, but if you like labels and fancy things just for the hell of it, I'd say go for it. I will continue to use it for foundation, and I'm going to also try applying blush with it as well. I shall see how that turns out.Beautyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10840900350257087393noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031945755618122790.post-31918956801402124762012-08-07T13:00:00.000-05:002012-08-07T13:00:02.422-05:00Review: Boots Expert Sensitive Gentle Cleansing Face WashUpon graduating an Aveda concept beauty school I had a lot of products in my kit left over to take home with me. So that's pretty much the only brand I have been using on my face besides different makeup products. A few months ago I ran out of my Aveda Botanical Kinetics Creme Cleanser and wanted to try something different and more affordable.

While shopping at Target I remembered my mom used a cleanser and moisturizer by Boots, and thought why not give it a try. It only cost me $4.69!
Product Info:

Sensitive skin needs extra care when being cleansed. This hypoallergenic foaming wash is specially formulated to be less drying. With soothing aloe vera and mineral water it leaves skin cleansed and refreshed.

Fragrance-free. Lanolin-free. Dermatologically tested.

PROS

+Leaves skin feeling clean and soft
+Very gentle
+Has a little to no smell
+Dispenses a light foam(a very small amount goes a long way)

CONS

The only con for me is that it can be a bit stripping, if you use too much of it. I'm a normal to dry skin type, but much oilier in the summer months. All you need is about 1/4th of a pump. Make sure to follow up with a good moisturizer.

Massage Envy has a great little magazine that they publish every season. It's very informative about topics such as massage, facials, and health in general. It's free for the public and their members. If you're ever near a Massage Envy drop in and grab yourself a copy.

Anyway, here's a great Q&A with Dr. Howard Murad, founder of Murad facial products, answering some of the readers burning questions. Check it out.

Q: How does stress affect my skin?
"Patients often don't realize how much stress affects their skin," says Dr. Murad. In fact, when you're stressed, your brain reacts by sending messages called neuropeptides throughout your body. These stress messages result in dehydration, which causes your skin to become dry and sensitive. On the other hand, you might notice increased breakouts under stress. That's because acne is an inflammatory process that is exacerbated by your heightened stress levels.

You can minimize the effect stress has on your skin. One way is to manage expectations in your life. "Don't judge yourself against unrealistic expectations. I still want you to function well and do a great job, but you can still do the best you can and not be perfect," says Dr. Murad.

Also, schedule time for yourself each week to relax and unwind. Schedule a massage or yoga class or simply read a book at your favorite coffee shop.

Q: How can I keep my skin looking young?
"A healthy lifestyle is the best way to stay looking young, and it includes eating right, sleeping well and reducing your stress levels as much as possible."

Now, we all know that answer sounds easier than it actually is, but Dr. Murad has some helpful tips. For one, "eat more plant foods than animal foods," he says. Make small changes, such as swapping out your morning toast for oatmeal or your instant mashed potatoes for baked sweet potatoes.

And you can help prevent your skin from developing signs of aging by ensuring you wear products with SPF daily and year-round. "Many people don't realize that a lot of damage that causes wrinkles is from the environment," says Dr. Murad. Eating fish rich in amino acids as well as beans and seeds can help diminish your fine lines.

Q: What is the best way to wash my face?
First of all, ensure your cleanser is the best for your skin type. "Don't use an acne cleanser if that's not what your skin needs. If you have sun damage, get one with antioxidants," says Dr. Murad.

"Next, make sure you thoroughly cleanse your skin at night," he says. It may be the last thing you want to do when you're finally ready to hit the hay, but it is essential to remove the grime and pollutants your skin has accumulated throughout the day. And you can use a washcloth to wash away your cleanser, but be gentle since the exfoliation may be too harsh for those with sensitive skin.

Q: What is the best way to fight adult acne?
While pimples, acid-washed jeans and braces are memories we would rather leave in our teenage years, unfortunately some adults have to fight the acne battle. But the breakouts that adults experience differ. "Adult acne is not as severe," says Dr. Murad. "Typically when adults have acne, it's from your nose down and is associated with stress."

And adults need to combat acne differently than when they were younger. "Treatment products need to be more gentle and include soothing ingredients that help diminish signs of aging," says Dr. Murad. He recommends you choose products that contain phytoestrogens such as soy or mushrooms, which improve elasticity and add moisture. These topical hormones also may be helpful in fighting hormonal acne, which some women experience around their menstrual cycle.

I personally have not mastered the art of giving Brazilian waxes. In school we only learned bikini waxing and saw one demo of a Brazilian. That is why it's on my to-do list and as an Esthetician it is your money maker. I have been asked a lot of questions from those who've never experienced receiving one. Therefore I did some research and came across a great list of tips that I wanted to share with you all.

First Time Brazilian Wax Tips

1. Research your local spas for a reputable place. An on-line investigation can be helpful, but I always recommend getting a referral from someone you know and trust. If you are unsure about a certain spa or waxer, start with a less intimate service before delving into the private areas. A good esthetician will always make your comfort level the top priority.

2. The Brazilian bikini wax should always be done using items that are sanitary and disposable. Disposable gloves should be worn by the esthetician and non-reusable waxing paper should be used on the esthetics table. Both should be tossed in the trash after your service. Any metal implements used (i.e. tweezers or scissors) should be sanitized between clients. Most importantly though, waxing spatulas should never be double-dipped in the wax.

3. Refrain from any type of shaving for at least 3 weeks before your waxing appointment. Shaving can make the hair more resistant to waxing and often times leaves it too short. Most often the esthetician will need a good ¼ inch of outgrowth. If your hair tends to be stubborn or coarse, you many need to grow it out about a week longer or more closely to a ½ inch.

4. Try to schedule your waxing appointments 3 or 4 days after your period. This time of the month tends to help to reduce sensitivities and anxiety associated with waxing.

5. Avoid Brazilian bikini waxing if you have a sunburn or have had a laser hair removal treatment in the past week.

6. Lightly exfoliate the area with a loofah or a gentle scrub 1-2 days BEFORE your appointment. Exfoliate the panty line area, as well as the area on the top of the pubic bone. Due to the abrasive nature, DO NOT exfoliate or use exfoliants inside any folds or crevices.

7. Take two Ibuprofen at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. This serves as an anti-inflammatory and can help reduce any discomfort.

8. Keep the lines of communication open with your esthetician. If you have experiencing extreme discomfort or embarrassment, please be frank and let her know as soon as possible. Getting a Brazilian bikini wax may be somewhat uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t be torturous!

NOTE: Avoid ALL waxing if you're taking any skin thinning medications internally and avoid waxing on areas topically treated. Click here for a list of medications.

Happy Brazilian Waxing!Beautyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10840900350257087393noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031945755618122790.post-22321378355033387672012-07-18T11:00:00.000-05:002012-07-18T11:00:01.083-05:00How To Treat Hyperpigmentation

Finding the right treatment for hyperpigmentation can very difficult because there are many factors involved. Such as hormones, which us Estheticians have no control over. One thing that must be addressed is your sun habits and you must avoid any exposure if any progress needs to be made. Before going outside make sure you apply an SPF 15-30 sunscreen everyday.

Home Care for Hyperpigmentation (according to Milady)

1. Cleanse with a product appropriate for your skin type.

2. Use a toner that is appropriate for your skin.

3. Apply an AHA product, usually a gel of 8%-10% AHA concentration.

4. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 15, usually with a physical sunscreen agent and built in moisturizer. If you work outdoors the sunscreen should be water-resistant.

5. At night follow the same instructions. However you don't need to use a toner or sunscreen at nighttime. Just a good moisturizer instead.

Before you go out to purchase any products I would highly recommend seeing an Esthetician first, because there are many other factors that may cause hyperpigmentation.

Please be patient! Hyperpigmentation is hard to treat and can take months before there is a change in your skin's appearance. You must be consulted consistently and diligent with your home care and spa treatments. Most importantly, all treatments should be non-agressive and non-irritating.

AHA's = Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Many are found in nature and as a result are sometimes referred to as fruit acids. When applied to the skin as part of a skin care regimen, alpha hydroxy acids loosen the outer layer of dead skin cells. source

If you want healthy skin you’ll need to take care of your face and nourish it with the right products. Everyone should have at least two products that they use for their facial regimen. One being a cleanser and the other a moisturizer. Both should be used twice a day. Yes, morning and night! You may ask why do I need to cleanse my face at night and AGAIN in the morning? Well for starters, our pillows and sheets that we lay our faces upon, can hold dirt & germs(unless you wash them everyday).

Now a more advanced regimen would consist of the following:

1. Cleanser: It removes surface dirt and impurities.
2. Toner: Refreshes skin, removes excess oil and product that your cleanser didn't remove (don't use at night).
3. Treatment product(s): Includes serums, eye creams, spot treatments, masques/masks, etc.
4. Moisturizer: Hydrates your skin.

I know that sounds like a lot. If you're lazy or cheap (haha) start with a basic regimen consisting of a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. All products should be used in the order listed above.

Here are few things you should keep in mind when looking for skin care products:

+ For sensitive skin use hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products. Usually anything containing less than 10 ingredients.
+ Normal/dry/dehydrated skin types should use a cream facial cleanser.
Oily skin types should use a gel cleanser.
+ Have dry skin? Avoid using products that contain alcohol, it will cause your skin to become tight and dry.

Hope that helps!
Beautyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10840900350257087393noreply@blogger.com0
